Maureen FitzSimons' early achievements in the performing arts (now known as Maureen O'Hara), would be a part of America's child prodigy list. But for a person of Irish heritage surrounded by gifted parents and a loving family, those were not innate traits. Maureen entered this loving sanctuary in Ranelagh, Ireland on August 17th 1920. Marguerita Lilburn FitzSimons was the mother of her. She was a skilled contralto. Charles FitzSimons ran a Dublin-based firm and also was a shareholder in the Irish Shamrock Rovers, a soccer team. Maureen was the second child of six FitzSimons children - Peggy, Florrie, Charles B. Fitzsimons, Margot Fitzsimons and James O'Hara completed this beautiful family. Maureen loved playing rough sports when she was young and became very proficient at it. Her natural ability to perform was a perfect complement to her interest in sport. The fact that she was awarded nearly all the Feis Awards for her home country's theater and drama is a testimony to the fact that she was a natural performer. In the age of 14, she had been accepted into the Abbey Theater, where her goal was to study operatic singing as well as classical theater.
